Clement McElroy "Whoopie" Landis

Clement McElroy “Whoopie” Landis, 89, or Nebraska City, Nebraska passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Ambassador Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Whoopie was born June 29, 1929, in Nebraska City to Clement Millar Landis and Mildred Doris (McElroy) Landis. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1947 and on September 10, 1948, married his high school sweetheart Lois Marie Stoewe. To this union two daughters were born, Diana Lynn Landis and Karen Sue (Landis) Hand. Outside of a few months in Omaha, he lived his entire life in Nebraska City. Whoopie enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War, where he served proudly. His father started Landis Engine Co. in the basement of their residence at 1206 First Corso. Whoopie worked alongside Clement as a small engine mechanic. As the business grew a lot was purchased a building erected at 210 South 11th Street and a new building was erected to house Landis Engine Co. Whoopie purchased the business and became the owner when Clement retired. He worked there  until he sold the business and retired. He was a hard working man and would always greet people with a smile and would ask “Have You Heard” to start telling a joke to you..Whoopie and Clement raced hydroplane and runabout boats for many years. When the go-cart craze hit small towns they, along with Lois,  raced those in Nebraska City and surrounding area. He was an avid fisherman and boater and preferred the Missouri River. Whoopie was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and also taught Sunday School. He was past master of Masonic Lodge #2 Nebraska City. Of great pride was his time as a volunteer fireman in Great Western Company and was Assistant Chief of the Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Department. After heart surgery he resigned to allow his spot to be assumed by a younger healthier volunteer. 
He is survived by his daughters, Diana Lynn Landis, Council Bluffs, IA;  and Karen (Gene) Hand,, Lincoln. Grandchildren Gregory Gene (Deanna Kuhn) Hand, Omaha,  and Kama Marie Hand (Chris) Bedient. Lincoln. Great grandchildren Tayler and Avery Hand of Omaha and Kaiden, Blayke, Hannah,  Paxton and Kolbe Bedient of Lincoln; sister Norma (Dave) Thompson, Grand Prairie, TX; sister-in-law Dr. Judith K. Stoewe, Omaha; brother-in-law William Zastera , Omaha; and special girlfriend and companion, Mary Kellogg, Nebraska City;  and many nieces and nephews. 
Preceded in death by his wife;parents, Clement and Mildred Landis:  sister-in-laws Betty Zastera, Margaret (Alan) Schuster. 
Visitation with the family greeting relatives and friends will be a Peterson Mortuary on Sunday, May 12th , 2019, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  Funeral Service will be held at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, 116 S 9th Street, Nebraska City, NE on Monday, May 13th at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, NE.
Memorials may be given in memory of Whoopie to the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church or the Nebraska City Fire Fighters Museum.
