Glen Eldon Hurst, 75 years, 1 month and 21 days, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
Glen was born on Wednesday, October 8, 1941, in Hamburg, Iowa, the son of Ernest Elvin and Laura Mae (Watkins) Hurst. Glen grew up in the country near Hamburg, Iowa, where he did all kinds of farm work, worked with cattle, hogs, mechanic, carpenter, shop manager, shop foreman, and supervisor for fertilizer plant. He entered the United States Army on February 20, 1960, where he served until his Honorary Discharge on December 31, 1967, and was in the Army National Guard. Glen went to work for Phil and Rosie Hall’s farm near Percival, Iowa, then Percival Oil and Agriculture, in Percival, Iowa, he retired in 2002. Glen and Betty Jane Janssen were united in marriage on April 20, 1978, in Rock Port, Missouri. They raised their children together: Deani, Rita, Diana, Ken, Duane, and David. Glen had also lived in, near Percival, Iowa, near Union, Nebraska, near Talmage, Nebraska, and residing in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, singing, playing his  guitar for his family and friends, dancing, horse back riding, horse training, and horse showing, which he won many trophies and ribbons. For many years after he retired, Glen had a leatherwork, saddle, boot and shoe repair business, that he absolutely loved doing! He continued to work in his leather shop until they moved off of the farm near Talmage and moved to Nebraska city in 2012. His greatest love was spending time with his family, grand kids and great grand kids. Glen was preceded by his: parents; granddaughter, Elizabeth Warland; brother Harvey Hurst; sisters, Lois Crecelius, and Beulah Harris; brother-in-law, Cleo Crecelius; great-niece Amy Aniceto.
Glen is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Betty Jane Hurst of Nebraska City, Nebraska; his 7 children, Deani Scroggins and husband David of Hamburg, Iowa, Sheena McDonald and husband Mike of Tecumseh, Nebraska, Rita Thomas of Longmont, Colorado, Diana Davis and husband Kelly of Rock Port, Missouri, Ken Hurst and wife Kim of Lincoln, Nebraska, Duane Radke and wife Lori of Nebraska City, Nebraska, and David Radke and wife Katie of Nebraska City, Nebraska; 20 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lettie Reese of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Edward Janssen and wife Lois of Lewisville, Texas; Glen's lap companion "Happy"; other relatives and friends.
Viewing and family greeting friends will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., with the Celebrations of the Life of Glen Eldon Hurst Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel, in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Private family interment of ashes  will be held at a later date at the Camp Creek Cemetery, Southeast of Nebraska City, Nebraska
The family suggest, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the choice of the family.
