Jim became a friend and a mentor when he arrived at the Second Avenue Grammar School
in the fourth grade. He created a minor revolution in that class. He was the best looking boy
who knew more and could do more than any of us. His artwork was beyond anything any of us could even begin to match. He taught me more about art than all the teachers and instructors down the line. His wood carvings were as good as any professional by the time we entered the fifth grade.

In later years, when I learned that he had married Phyllis, I knew they had both made a very good choice. Decades passed and I tracked him down and found he’d been living in Nebraska City. Then he and Phyllis honored me by inviting me to their fiftieth wedding anniversary. One can tell a lot about a person by their friends. Those who were there that day said volumes about the quality of the man and his wife.

No, Jim was not ordinary. He was a special talented kid who made a big difference in my life.
He represented the best of us as a kid and as a man. Perfect? Oh heck no. But a good man?
Oh yes.

As Paul put it, “Absent from the body is present with the Lord.” The pain of his loss on earth
will be with us for a long time but one can rejoice at his homegoing to be with the Lord. We
will all get there eventually. What a marvelous reunion that will be.

I am sorry I could not be there for the services. My deepest respects for Jim are in my prayers.
My condolences for Phyllis and family are there as well.

Phillis and family our condolences and sympathies at the passing of Jim. Although it has been about 6 years since we saw each other, he had been in my thoughts quite often. The time has passed so fast, it seems like it was only last week when we hunted, worked and just spent time together.

I had hoped to be there with you and the family tonight or Wednesday, but circumstances will not allow me to be there, but your in our thoughts and prayers.

Phyllis & Family;
My wife, Becky, and I will lift you up in prayer during the difficult days ahead. It was 12 years ago (minus a few days) that Jim drove the hearse that carried my Dad on his final ride to Wyuka, and he has been a good friend to me and my family for many years. I will miss not being able to call him with a woodworking or carpentry question when I'm trying to figure something out, because no matter how he was feeling at the time, he could summon the energy to offer some help. His faith was unshakable, and I pray that God grants you peace and comfort.
