Herbert H. Wieckhorst, age 99, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, December 15, 2017. Herb was born to Peter H. and Emma Marie (Griepenstroh) Wieckhorst on November 28, 1918, on the family farm south of Nebraska City, Nebraska. Herb graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1936. He enlisted in the Navy for four years and was discharged. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Herb reenlisted for four more years, serving as a diesel mechanic on ships in the Pacific. On July 9, 1943, Herb and Marie R. Cox, where united in marriage in San Diego, California. After receiving an honorable discharge, Herb returned to his wife and Nebraska City, where he took over the family farm operation.
Herb was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge 1049 and Fraternal Order of Eagles #968. He served on many church and community boards. Herb was a military hero and hero in other ways to many people. He cared deeply for family, friends, community, and country. Herb really never retired from farming or working but, in later years, took time to meet his coffee buddies every morning.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 67 years, and his two brothers: Harry and Walter. Herb is survived by: daughter, Sherry Bitz and husband Kenneth of LaRue, Texas; son, Harry Wieckhorst and wife Dianne of Nebraska City; granddaughter, Anne Bennett and Adam of Nebraska City; grandson, Andrew Wieckhorst of Julian, Nebraska; two great grandsons: Preston Wieckhorst and Trevor Bennett; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
